The festival was first established in 1958 and quickly became an important part of Cardiff's cultural life, welcoming internationally renowned performers and premiering works by leading Welsh composers including William Mathias and Alun Hoddinott. Following a number of years away, the festival was reimagined in 2022.

The revival of the festival was the brainchild of Olivia Moore, a Cardiff-based opera singer, producer and Head of Marketing at Llandaff Cathedral. Inspired by a desire to reconnect people through the arts following the pandemic, Olivia worked with the Dean and Chapter to bring the festival back to life. What began as a four-day celebration in the Cathedral has since grown into the Llandaf Festival, with events taking place across the community and a programme that celebrates music, arts, ideas and creativity.

Today, the festival is produced by Olivia with the support and guidance of the Festival Committee, the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff Cathedral, an incredible team of volunteers, and a growing network of artists, partners and sponsors. Together they continue to build a festival that honours its remarkable heritage while creating new opportunities for people to experience the arts in extraordinary spaces.
